The Scandinavian kingdom of Sweden is a particularly interesting location for logistics in northern Europe. This is partly due to the country's long-term EU membership and good ties with neighbouring countries Norway, Denmark and Finland. There are intensive trade relations with the Netherlands and Germany, as well as non-EU states England and Russia.

The Swedish logistics industry has strongly developed into an important international market for international transport. Although the country has only 10 million residents (especially the south is densely populated), its area of over 450,000 km2, high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and well-developed infrastructure make it an attractive country for logistics.

The country's main economic sectors are agriculture (mainly based on animal husbandry), export of mineral resources, automobile, timber, machinery and electricity industries. Large international companies such as Volvo, Scania, Saab, ABB, Electrolux and Tetra-Pak contribute to Sweden's economic success.

For transport to and from this interesting transport country, it is only logical for you as a company – together with Seacon as your professional partner – to take your logistics to a higher level. On this page, you can read more about our transport solutions for Sweden.

Major transport routes Sweden and your benefits

Sweden's economic development is not just based on the efforts of a few big companies. The Swedish market is also characterised by its favourable market environment and optimal access opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises. One of the main reasons for this is the country's well-developed infrastructure. Sweden is one of the safest countries in terms of road transport. Thanks to its location on the Baltic Sea, they also have important deep-sea ports from which goods are transported worldwide.

Sweden's well-developed road network covers more than 400,000 kilometres and connects all the country's economic centres. Goods can also be transported quickly via one of the Baltic ports' many ferry connections. The most frequently used transport links via the road network are the routes from Rostock/Travemünde to Malmö and the Western Main Line (Jutland Line) via Gothenburg, Oslo, Jönköping and Stockholm.

Rail transport is an attractive and sustainable option to and from Sweden. Besides the state railway company Statens Järnvägar, there are also regional players that have been supported by an investment programme for years. Modern high-speed trains connect Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. The Danish capital Copenhagen can also be reached from here. The Öresund Bridge (toll required) links Sweden directly to Copenhagen in Denmark.

Sea freight is also highly developed as an important transport route due to its location on the Baltic Sea. From the Swedish seaports in Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Trelleborg and Kalskrona, your goods reach their final destination quickly and effectively. Our sea freight overview page provides more information on the benefits of sea freight.

Finally, air cargo has also evolved significantly in recent years. Of particular note here is the early specialisation in freight traffic. In particular, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport (Stockholm), Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport (Gothenburg) and Malmö Airport (Malmö) are suitable for (heavy) air transport. Intermodal transport can be deployed from the airports.

Key cities for freight transport in Sweden

Sweden's most important and largest cities are located almost exclusively in the south of the country. This has several advantages for industry, as distances between cities are relatively short and its location on the Baltic Sea allows for international transport.

The main logistics location in Sweden is the capital Stockholm and the region around it, where more than 15% of Sweden's population live. Most international companies are also located here, creating an interesting logistics hub and junction for global transport.

The second major logistics location in Sweden is Malmö. Through the Öresund Bridge, Malmö city is directly connected to Copenhagen in Denmark, allowing transports - mainly to the European Union - to be handled quickly and efficiently. Other major cities include Gothenburg (northwest of Malmö) and Upsala (north of Stockholm).

Groupage Sweden - LCL and LTL

The term LTL (Less Than Truck Load) is used in freight transport to indicate that only part of the available cargo space of the truck is filled. In the logistics industry, it is therefore common to combine several partial loads at one loading point or to add a partial load. In short, groupage or LTL is therefore the merging of several smaller loads into one larger load. This optimises the use of the freight container during road freight.

The abbreviation LCL stands for Less than Container Load and in sea freight refers to shipments that do not fill an entire container and are combined with other general cargo in a consolidated container. LCL transport mainly offers price advantages and some benefits in practical handling and stowage. For general cargo, only proportionate transport costs are incurred for the use of the container volume.

Full loads Sweden - FCL or FTL

The abbreviation FCL (Full Container Load) is used in sea freight for full container loads. Unlike LCL: a load that only partially fills a container. With FCL loads, the container is loaded by a shipper and unloaded at the destination by a consignee.

With an FTL delivery (Full Truck Load), the shipment fills the entire available cargo space. The truck transports this shipment to its destination without reloading. This is for one recipient. This completely utilises the truck’s transport capacity.

Fast delivery is the main advantage of FTL. This is because there is no need for transhipment or extra route planning to different recipients. The truck drives directly to one destination. It is the most effective method of transporting goods by road to a final destination.

Incoterms®: Protect your international trade with Sweden

As a global logistics chain director, Seacon Logistics deals a lot with Incoterms®. Although we are not involved in the commercial agreements between buyer and seller, we are often consulted about the dangers and consequences of the various Incoterms® before a transaction is concluded. In practice, many companies still underestimate the risks.

To ensure that contractual formulas in the trade of goods are interpreted equally by buyer and seller, we have created a white paper and an infographic.

Sweden is one of Europe's northernmost countries. Besides a special geographical location and a relatively cold climate, Sweden has some special features politically that you should take into account. The overview below shows which features these are:

  • Not a member of the EEA: Unlike most EU member states, Sweden is not part of the European Economic Area (EEA) or the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The national currency is the Swedish krona (SKR).
  • Tolls: In Sweden, tolls are charged on certain sections. Trucks over 12 tonnes GVW must have an E vignette on motorways and toll roads.
  • EU membership: Depending on the project, you will need an EU licence or CEMT permit for international transport. See also the bilateral permits between Hungary and third countries.
  • Dangerous goods and heavy cargo air freight: Special regulations apply to the transport of dangerous goods. This is due to the fact that ferries are used as means of transport. Moreover, it is possible to transport heavy cargo by air through selected airports.

If you have more detailed questions about the specifics or rules in Sweden, please feel free to contact our team. In a joint logistic analysis, we examine which aspects are relevant for your goods transport.
