Hong Kong, as a special administrative region located in the south of China, which enjoys a unique status that provides local businesses with various benefits and makes the city one of the most important international transport hubs. The densely populated city has almost ten million inhabitants and is located on the South China Sea.

Hong Kong is one of the wealthiest areas in China, with an income of just under USD 50,000 per capita. The country owes this to its excellent school and education system, which provides businesses with highly educated employees, and is one of many positive factors for locating in Hong Kong.

Companies in special administrative zones like Hong Kong enjoy special legal provisions and tax benefits such as VAT exemption. In particular, the customs exemption (no customs duties are levied on imported goods) makes Hong Kong attractive as a logistics hub. Please contact our specialists if you would like to know more about customs duties and local benefits.

Hong Kong's economy is characterised by strengths such as little government regulation, an efficient bureaucracy and excellent infrastructure. The financial sector in particular is strongly represented in Hong Kong. Furthermore, Hong Kong, together with Macau, is known as a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. Hong Kong prides itself on its status as a financial metropolis and does everything it can to maintain it. It looks like it will stay that way for a while, as 'competitors' Singapore or Shenzhen can only offer the same location factors as Hong Kong with the help of far-reaching reforms.

Both the airport and port of Hong Kong are among the largest of their kind in terms of cargo handling. Hong Kong is known as the 'gateway to Asia', so it's no surprise that the country is considered a logistics hub for all of China. Goods are transported quickly and efficiently by sea freight or air freight, from where they are transported further inland thanks to the modern and cost-effective railway system (China Rail) and road network. Intermodal transport plays a central role and is well-deployable thanks to the many modalities in the country.

For Hong Kong transport, it is only logical for you as a company – together with Seacon as your professional partner – to take your logistics to a higher level. On this page, you can read more about our transport solutions for Hong Kong.

Key transport routes Hong Kong and your benefits

Hong Kong's air and waterways are essential for international cargo transport. Due to its direct location on the sea and an airport that handles the highest volume of cargo in the world, the region serves as an important international logistics centre. Goods are shipped all over the world from this export-oriented area.

Due to the many flights from the airport to European cities, fast and uncomplicated transport is possible. During the construction of the airport, the 'Route 8' highway was built, which connects the airport directly to the city centre.

Much import and export take place from the modern port of Hong Kong. The direct and fast connections with nearby economic centres, including Shenzhen and Shanghai, facilitate all types of freight transport. Hong Kong continues to invest in infrastructure expansion and modernšiation to remain competitive, but also to provide the state-of-the-art companies with the infrastructure they need to serve as a gateway to the Chinese and Asian markets.

Hong Kong has a modern railway network (China Rail). Thanks to investments by the Chinese government, this network has grown enormously in recent years. This extensive rail network – connected to more than 60 countries – will be further expanded in the future as part of the so-called New Silk Road, making it even more attractive to transport your goods by rail. Both the port and the airport will be integrated into the New Silk Road network in the future, making Hong Kong even more important as a logistics hub.

Important cities for cargo transport in Hong Kong

Due to its important position for logistics, Hong Kong is one of the most important cities in China. The inland of Hong Kong can be divided into various logistics locations. The two main locations for cargo transport are the port 'Port of Hong Kong' (HKP) and the airport 'Hong Kong International Airport' (HKG). Both ports for freight traffic are 35 km apart and can be reached by road or rail in a short time. Both locations are located south of the economic centre of Shenzhen and are located directly on the South China Sea.

The Port of Hong Kong is located in the centre of the city in Victoria Harbour and is in close proximity to all exporters and importers. Thanks to the deep waters of Victoria Harbour, the port is a deep-sea port, enabling all (container) ships to load and unload there without any problems.

Hong Kong International Airport is located outside the city centre, but is easily accessible by highway, train, (automated) passenger transport or ferry. This makes it an attractive and important location for freight transport. Thanks to the advanced infrastructure, goods are also transported to and from the airport quickly and reliably, even when it comes to perishable goods with high urgency.

Due to the many transport options in Hong Kong, the country is extremely suitable for intermodal transport

Groupage Hong Kong - LCL and LTL

The term LTL (Less Than Truck Load) is used in freight transport to indicate that only part of the available cargo space of the truck is filled. In the logistics industry, it is therefore common to combine several partial loads at one loading point or to add a partial load. In short, groupage or LTL is therefore the merging of several smaller loads into one larger load. This optimises the use of the freight container during road freight.

The abbreviation LCL stands for Less than Container Load and in sea freight refers to shipments that do not fill an entire container and are combined with other general cargo in a consolidated container. LCL transport mainly offers price advantages and some benefits in practical handling and stowage. For general cargo, only proportionate transport costs are incurred for the use of the container volume.

Full loads Hong Kong - FCL or FTL

The abbreviation FCL (Full Container Load) is used in sea freight for full container loads. Unlike LCL: a load that only partially fills a container. With FCL loads, the container is loaded by a shipper and unloaded at the destination by a consignee.

With an FTL delivery (Full Truck Load), the shipment fills the entire available cargo space. The truck transports this shipment to its destination without reloading. This is for one recipient. This completely utilises the truck’s transport capacity.

Fast delivery is the main advantage of FTL. This is because there is no need for transhipment or extra route planning to different recipients. The truck drives directly to one destination. It is the most effective method of transporting goods by road to a final destination.

Incoterms®: Protect your international trade with Hong Kong

As a global logistics chain director, Seacon Logistics deals a lot with Incoterms®. Although we are not involved in the commercial agreements between buyer and seller, we are often consulted about the dangers and consequences of the various Incoterms® before a transaction is concluded. In practice, many companies still underestimate the risks.

To ensure that contractual formulas in the trade of goods are interpreted equally by buyer and seller, we have created a white paper and an infographic.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shows close ties to China with the regulations there. However, Hong Kong has some local characteristics that you should take into account, including the currency and customs rules. In the overview below you can read what you should pay attention to:

  • Own currency: In Hong Kong, payment is made with the Hong Kong dollar, which is more or less linked to the US dollar. The currency is also accepted in some other regions of China.
  • Traffic drives on the left: Due to its past as a British colony, Hong Kong follows a traffic rule that traffic drives on the left.
  • Customs: Due to its status as a special administrative region, generally no customs duties or tariffs need to be paid when goods are transported to Hong Kong.
  • Highways: No tolls are levied on highways in Hong Kong. When travelling to surrounding rural areas, you will encounter Chinese toll regulations.

If you have more detailed questions about the specifics or rules in Hong Kong, please feel free to contact our team. In a joint logistic analysis, we examine which aspects are relevant for your goods transport.
