Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects B.V. European distribution

At Seacon Logistics, we are very happy with our clients, which is why we're keen to share stories of great collaborations. We spoke to: Anne-Marie van Beek, Head of Logistics, and Nina Wessels, Logistics Assistant at Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects B.V.

Since 1953, Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects has been designing and completing horticultural projects that focus on sustainable, locally grown products and high-tech greenhouses. Every greenhouse is a turnkey project and is completely custom-built. Some examples include greenhouses that are earthquake-proof or that keep the harvest at the desired temperature, even in tropical temperatures.

Van der Hoeven works on innovative systems and project optimisation with a team of 140 professionals. With the innovative, high-grade technologies they use, they also make a positive contribution to environmental issues and global food security.

Logistics project: Van der Hoeven | Seacon Logistics

“Although our planning is often completed well in advance, sometimes something does need to be loaded urgently. We can always go to Seacon confidently with these kinds of logistical questions. They make the necessary adjustments without problems and quickly find a tailor-made solution.”

“We came into contact with Seacon Logistics about five years ago through a mutual client in Greece, Wonderplant,” says Anne-Marie. “They bought a greenhouse from us and the logistics operation to Greece went through Seacon Logistics. That’s how we came into contact with each other for that project. When a new order came in from Greece, we contacted Seacon again immediately, in part because they’re Greece specialists, and also because the previous transport went so smoothly. Since March 2021, we’ve been working together intensively on this larger project, which involves transporting about 100 trucks full of construction materials from the Netherlands to Greece.”

“In large global projects, planning is crucial,” Nina says. “The construction is being done in a strict sequence. First we build up the greenhouse framework, then the glazing, and then we install all the equipment and the cultivation system. This is done in parts so not everything needs to be stored on site, and vulnerable systems are not exposed to variable weather conditions. After a project is sold, Van der Hoeven calculates the size of the greenhouse and how many trucks will be needed where and when. The planning is always well coordinated in consultation with our logistics partners - of which Seacon Logistics is a major one - so our construction team always has materials available and can continue with the construction work.”

“We work with Seacon on a project basis in Greece and France. We’re also currently working on orders for new projects in Bulgaria and Greece. Seacon is involved in new orders at an early stage to facilitate the calculation of logistics costs. It is important for us that a logistics service provider knows our company, how we work, and the market. At Van der Hoeven, we deliver customised work to our customers, which means we don’t have a standard procedure for transporters. Seacon deals with this well because they consider it essential to have a good understanding of their customers’ products and markets. That means they’re well-attuned to our wants and needs.”

“We really like the fact that Seacon works with us to think about the possibilities and that they’re so proactive and flexible,” Anne-Marie adds. “Although our planning is often completed well in advance, sometimes something does need to be loaded urgently. We can always go to Seacon confidently with these kinds of logistical questions. They make the necessary adjustments without problems and quickly find a tailor-made solution. They also always communicate with us openly and honestly. If something turns out not to be possible, they always come up with an alternative. It’s great! Another plus is that they have a lot of experience with the legislation and regulations, and they know how the Greek market works, so we don’t have to worry about that. Van der Hoeven and Seacon Logistics click well with each other, which makes us very happy to be working together.”
